Thank you so much for the prayers. These past few days have consisted of prepping, teaching, and eating, but there are some highlights within that. Our first day of teaching was interesting because we really did not know what to expect. How much English did the kids know? How big was the class size? God really helped us out in teaching the kids and it was overall a good experience.
The drive to the mountain village was beautiful, with intense greenery and rolling hills. After experiencing the colours, noise and extremes of the city, I liked seeing rural Thailand, too. Many kids are taken care of by grandparents, since their parents have gone to Bangkok to work, and they struggle with restlessness and addiction. Farming is difficult and not very profitable, especially for the elderly.
When I first arrived in Thailand I had little idea of what being a missionary entailed, but with help I am beginning to fit the pieces together. The big picture is the kingdom of God. We are all in different ways trying to help build it; that is our unified goal. How one goes about building the kingdom is another story. Some minister to the marginalized, outcasts or refuges. Some take a more round-about route and minister to a large group through English camps, interesting object lessons, booklets, and audio-track distribution.
Our Interchange team is currently at the Edmonton airport, trying to catch the last few minutes of the Nashville/Winnipeg hockey game before we begin our cross cultural exposure trip to Thailand. We would appreciate your prayers throughout this trip, but also as students return home and integrate what they have learned into their daily life. We have encouraged students to challenge the notion that “missions’ trips” are somehow more spiritual than the rest of life. However, we do recognize that the next few weeks are a season where we could use the support of some intentional prayer as we
I received an email a few weeks ago from a Mount Carmel alumnus recalling an almost off-handed comment I had made more than a decade ago. This person was then facing a difficult and intimidating situation. I apparently encouraged them by saying “You are going to be okay”. I didn’t remember the situation they described; I didn’t remember making the comment at all. But somehow that phrase had remained significant for them over the past few years.
