To the Mount Carmel Bible College Community:
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank you for your prayers and support over the last several months as the Presidential Search and Hiring Process has unfolded. This letter is intended to provide you with an update on where we are in the process and to join us as we welcome a new President and prepare for the next year and season of ministry at Mount Carmel.
As you may know, the Presidential Hiring Committee posted a job description for Mount Carmel’s President earlier this year. We had several candidates submit applications in response, and out of these a shortlist of four candidates was developed. After a comprehensive interview process with the shortlisted candidates the Board of Directors met twice to review, discuss, and pray through the outcomes of the hiring committee’s work. The full board then voted unanimously on the recommended candidate and following these meetings, an offer was extended. That candidate has since accepted the offer and we are making plans to get him integrated with Mount Carmel over the summer and ready for the fall class.
So without further ado we would like to introduce the new President of Mount Carmel Bible College, Dr. Alan Palmer. Alan is a sincere follower of Jesus, and an experienced leader and educator who shows a vision for moving Mount Carmel forward while maintaining its core mission, and honouring it's heritage. We are grateful for the way that God has directed this process and brought the board together on this decision, and are excited for what Alan brings to Mount Carmel and the greater community.
The following is a short bio from Alan as a first introduction, next week we will send out a recorded interview with Alan so you can hear from him yourself and learn more about who he is and his heart for Mount Carmel.
Thank you once more for your ongoing support of the work being done at Mount Carmel. Please join us in welcoming Alan and Val to our community and keep them and the rest of staff, students, and Board members in your prayers as we enter this exciting next chapter.
Chair, Mount Carmel Bible College Board of Directors
Mini Biography: Dr Alan Palmer
I became a Christian as a teenager in the UK. God really got a hold of my life at that time and pointed me in a completely new direction. I was mentored and ‘discipled’ by a fantastic husband and wife team. They taught me to love God’s Word, to love the people who loved the Lord Jesus, and to seek to share my faith with everyone I met. Through my teenage years, I led teen bible studies, taught Sunday school and took part in street evangelism, and youth missions. Early on, I knew that God had called me to be a preacher and teacher of His Word – to be involved in evangelism and pastoral care.
To get better equipped for what I believed God was calling me too, I went to Bible College and university. I studied at the London School of Theology, Regent College Vancouver, Greenwich University, Wesley House, Cambridge and Oxford University. God has used these learning experiences to give me more depth to my Biblical and Theological understanding, and to better equip me as a Teaching/Pastoral elder and Theological educator.
I was the teaching pastor at my first church when I was in my early twenties. Since then I have been involved in Evangelism, Pastoral work, Bible teaching, writing Commentaries and other academic material. I have worked in Pastoral Work and Theological education in the UK, Europe and Canada. I am passionate about discipleship and training…wanting to ‘equip the saints for the work of ministry, in order to build up the body of Christ’ Ephesians 4:12. Under God, I have seen growth and transformation happen with various churches, colleges, and groups I have worked with. I want to give Him all the glory for this. Psalm 115:1
Latterly, I have been the Lead Chaplain and Graduate Educator at an NHS Hospital and Medical School in the UK and sessional lecturer at Ambrose University, Calgary. I have learned a great deal in terms of being able to lead, communicate and develop organizations through this five-year experience.
I am married to Val, who I have known since we were in Sunday school together. I have two grownup sons, Alex and Sam who both live, and work in London. Both avid ‘winter sports’ guys.
I am excited to start working with Mount Carmel Bible College this Fall. For me the vision of giving young people a year to learn the Bible, grow deeper in their love for God and to experience the challenge of discipleship is awesome.
Jim Elliot’s statement has stuck with me through Christian life, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."
I cannot wait to get started at MCBC.
With God’s blessings of grace and peace.
